Purpose of the position 

The aim of IKHMG is to protect and restore the Mauri of Kaipara and to create a healthy and productive Kaipara Harbour. We have four non-negotiable principles that must be adhered to at all times when representing IKHMG: 

  • Manaakitanga
  • Kaitiakitanga
  • Eco-systems based
  • Co-management approach

The purpose of this position is to enable Kaipara Mana Whenua to be the primary driver for protecting and restoring the mauri of the Kaipara.

The right candidate will weave Māori philosophy and Western science, focusing on the objectives outlined in the IKHMG Strategic Plan of Action.  The candidate will also collect information and provide advice to land owners at a sub-catchment level relating to the implementation of the science of land remediation requirements and in particular, identifying and utilising Mātauranga Māori concepts applicable within these areas.

The Mātauranga Māori Adviser will work closely with the Programme Manager, Land Management Advisers and Senior Administrator in the coordination and promotion of water quality improvement, soil conservation and afforestation initiatives.  You will also work on programmes focused on best farming practice and sustainable land management at catchment scale.  The Adviser will liaise with hapū / Iwi and enable transmission of Mātauranga Māori components to sub-catchment and farm plans and planting applications.
