Data Analyst/Kaitātari Hoahoa
Statistics NZ
If you’re someone who enjoys getting to the story behind the data, finds satisfaction in producing work that others rely on, and wants to help shape how data and insights are delivered in the future — we’d like to hear from you.
Stats NZ is looking for Data Analysts to join our Insights and Statistics teams, with multiple fixed-term opportunities available in Pōneke (Wellington) and Ōtautahi (Christchurch).
The work we deliver is nationally significant and plays a critical role in setting the standard for how high-quality data is produced and used across both public and private sectors. These roles are suited to people who are curious, thoughtful, and motivated by impact — and who want to play a part in modernising how we produce trusted economic statistics and insights for Aotearoa.
Mō te tūnga | About the roles
As part of our team, you will help to modernise core economic statistics, including identifying opportunities to streamline processes, better integrate data across systems, and make effective use of automation and AI.
You’ll take ownership of pieces of work, while contributing to broader system and process improvements across the team and shaping insights that inform decisions made by government, iwi, businesses and communities. You’ll contribute to work that sets the standard for data stewardship in Aotearoa — influencing what good looks like across the wider data and statistics system.
A key part of this role sits at the front end of analysis — combining strong conceptual thinking with practical application to shape how data is structured, interpreted, and produced, not just working with final outputs.
Day to day, you’ll work with data, contribute to statistical products, and ensure outputs are accurate, meaningful, and delivered with confidence. You’ll also help strengthen capability — supporting others, sharing your expertise, and improving how work gets done over time.
As one of our Data Analysts, you will:
- Contribute to the production and ongoing evolution of high-quality statistical products
- Analyse data across core releases and datasets, identifying trends, investigating drivers, and shaping insights that inform future decisions
- Ensure outputs are accurate and robust, while strengthening how quality is embedded into processes over time
- Work across multiple data sources, systems, and datasets to design and embed more sustainable, efficient ways of working
- Develop and apply forward-looking methods, tools, and standards that support modern statistical and data production and high-quality data stewardship
- Use sound judgement to interpret and apply standards in complex or evolving environments
- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate processes, including the use of emerging tools and AI
- Contribute to scalable frameworks and approaches that improve consistency, efficiency, and future capability
Location: You must be based in Pōneke (Wellington) or Ōtautahi (Christchurch), or be willing to relocate for these roles.
Salary: $84,027-$98,855
Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring
You bring strong analytical capability, sound judgement, and a genuine interest in using economic data to inform decision-making. You’re comfortable working with complexity and ambiguity, and able to translate data into meaningful outputs and insights.
You’re also a strong conceptual thinker — someone who can step back, see the bigger picture, and help shape how work should be approached, not just completed.
You will bring:
- Relevant qualifications or experience in economics, finance, national accounts, accounting, statistics, or a related field
- Strong analytical and data skills, with confidence working with and interpreting data
- Experience or interest in working across multiple datasets, systems, or environments
- An understanding of economics, corporate finance, and/or statistical production, and the ability to apply this in practice
- The ability to develop robust analysis and contribute to the development of high-quality outputs
- Sound judgement and confidence working with ambiguity and evolving standards
- A collaborative mindset — you are someone who enjoys working with others, sharing knowledge, and contributing to collective success.
While this role does require relevant skills, we appreciate that these can be developed in a variety of settings. We encourage you to bring your full, unique self to your application.
