Te tūnga | The role   

This is a fixed-term opportunity through to April 2027, covering a secondment. The role can be based in Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch. 

As Kaitohutohu Matua - Wāteatanga | Senior Advisor - Accessibility at Tatauranga Aotearoa | Stats NZ, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting accessibility for disabled people across Aotearoa New Zealander. Working within the Specialist Data Capability Team, you’ll collaborate closely with Accessibility Advisors, engagement specialists, and survey delivery teams, with support from the Unit Manager - Specialist Data Capability. 

You’ll build strong, trusted relationships across the organisation, partnering with groups such as the Accessibility Working Group and the Diversity & Inclusion Working Group. Your influence will span major initiatives including the Census, the Household Disability Survey, and Census statistical releases - helping embed accessibility from design through to delivery. 

This is a role with real impact. You’ll lead accessibility requirements for Census engagement, support inclusive survey outputs, and help lift organisational capability so Stats NZ’s services and data products are accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for disabled people and their whānau across Aotearoa.

You will bring: 

  • Experience working with accessibility tools or technology, or a demonstrated understanding of barriers faced by disabled people. 
  • Proven relationship management experience, with a strong collaborative approach. 
  • Experience delivering accessible solutions that address barriers to participation and support equitable outcomes for tāngata whaikaha Māori, disabled people, and their whānau. 
  • An understanding of intersectionality and how overlapping identities, experiences, and barriers can shape access, participation, and outcomes for disabled people, including tāngata whaikaha Māori, Pacific disabled people, disabled women, rainbow disabled people, and other communities 
  • Experience and confidence in leading presentations and meaningful discussions with a range of audiences. 
  • An understanding of data collection processes, statistical information needs, and data quality. 
  • Experience working through ambiguous or complex issues within a large organisation. 
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to clearly articulate advice, insights, and priorities to key stakeholders.

Starting salary: $96,307 - $130,298 + KiwiSaver
