The Parks and Open Spaces team provide a critical customer facing support service, ensuring the city's residents/citizens and visitors enjoy a well-managed and maintained environment. Wellington City Council operates two cemeteries at Karori and Mākara and maintains a historic cemetery in Tawa. There is a crematorium and two chapels at Karori Cemetery, and an urupā at Mākara Cemetery.
Āu ake mahi - What you'll do
In the role of Cemetery Technician, you will be part of a small supportive team delivering all the services associated with working across the beautiful and historically important Karori, Mākara and Tawa cemeteries.
This is a varied role and will require a special person who is able to undertake physical work around the cemetery grounds but also has empathy for families who have lost loved ones and can provide excellent customer service, interact with Funeral Directors, and follow procedures.
Your proven ability to communicate clearly and attention to detail will ensure delivery of high service standards to the families we serve. Our ideal person will enjoy working outdoors and be equally comfortable assisting families during chapel services.
We are looking for a person with a strong customer service focus with an understanding of the unique environment cemeteries operate in.
No two days will be the same - you will be preparing plots and assisting families at burial services at either Karori or Mākara Cemeteries, and cremation services at the Karori Crematorium. You'll also do cemetery maintenance, including weed eating, lawn mowing, weed-spraying, and general grounds maintenance to a high standard.
This is a full-time permanent role however due to the nature of the role, some flexibility in the hours is required and will be organised in advance with the team when possible. You will be required to work weekends on occasion.
Ngā tohu me ngā wheako - Qualifications and experience
This role calls for a person who has a mature outlook, is comfortable with bereavement and who has diverse skills. You will be able to quickly pick up our new technology, be confident working on a tablet or willing to learn, follow procedures and work sensitively around bereaved people.
To be considered for this role, a driver's licence is a must - we can train you in operating a JCB Back-Hoe digger or similar machinery.

Pre-employment checks
All employees must undergo a Criminal Conviction Check. Please note this role is safety sensitive and will require you to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol, health and musculoskeletal testing.
The Council uses the AS/NZ drug standard to determine the cut off levels for drug testing. Some prescription drugs may be included within this standard.
