Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō - Working together for Wellington's future.

At Wellington City Council, we put people at the heart of what we do. We care for our places, work collaboratively, and are always looking for better ways of doing things. If you're a strong Financial Accountant who enjoys working in a complex, purpose-driven environment, this could be the role for you.

Āu ake mahi - what you'll do

We're looking for an experienced Financial Accountant to join our busy Financial Control team and provide additional support while the team go through a transitional phase. You will play a pivotal role in maintaining strong financial controls and ensuring the integrity of Wellington City Council's financial information.

The initial priority will be helping with the end of year process. This will involve collaborating with audit and stakeholders across Council to ensure we have the appropriate information for financial reporting.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the Council meets its financial reporting and planning accountability commitments
  • Assisting with the preparation of the Council and group financial statements including completing consolidation workings
  • Assisting with any other external financial reporting requirements (e.g. statistics returns)
  • Ensuring Council's tax obligations and compliance with relevant tax legislation are met via assistance with various tax returns (e.g. GST, FBT, NRWT etc)
  • Managing various bank and other administration processes

This role is a one-year fixed-term, part-time contract. The hours will be 20-25 hours per week and we are flexible with how you work those hours. Ideally, it will be across four days.

If you are interested in the role but want to discuss a different work pattern, we encourage you to submit your application and outline what will work best for you in your cover letter.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako - qualifications and experience

We're looking for someone who has an accounting or finance-related tertiary qualification or relevant experience they can draw on, ideally from five plus years in an accounting or business environment. You may be part qualified towards a professional accounting qualification or looking to get back into the workforce after a break.

You'll be a team player, someone who is flexible, competent with Excel and accounting systems, and be a safe pair of hands. Ideally, you'll also have experience working in an environment where you have improved, simplified and streamlined processes.

We are looking to appoint between $103,494 and $121,757 full-time equivalent per annum for this role, depending on relevant skills and experience.

Nōu te rourou - what's in it for you

Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including five weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.
