New Zealand Māori Rugby Board – Appointed and Independent Board Member vacancies

The New Zealand Māori Rugby Board Incorporated (“NZMRB”) invites applications for two positions on its Board.  The vacancies relate to terms of three (3) years, commencing on or about 6 May 2026. One of the vacancies is for a person who is independent of the Regional Māori Rugby Boards (Te Hiku o te Ika, Te Tini a Māui, Te Waipounamu), while the other vacancy is for a person who is preferably recommended by a Regional Māori Rugby Board (but not necessarily a member of one of those Boards). Both successful candidates will be appointed by the NZMRB’s Appointment Committee.

Please note that the incumbent Board members in both positions (Arran Pene and Warren Alcock) are eligible to apply for reappointment, and have indicated that they will do so.

According to the NZMRB constitution, the NZMRB’s objectives are to promote and develop rugby pathways amongst Māori, to monitor the Regional Māori Rugby Boards, to establish arrangements for Māori rugby tournaments and other events, to seek and distribute funding and sponsorship for Māori rugby and to advocate on behalf of Māori rugby.  The current NZMRB structure can be found on the NZR website, and a high-level overview of the NZMRB strategy can be found here.

The roles require engaged applicants with transformational mindsets, to assist in re-imagining Māori rugby through strategic initiatives for Māori within the New Zealand Rugby (NZR) system. Applicants should have an appreciation of, and a willingness to embrace, tikanga and/or te reo and demonstrated networks in Te Ao Māori and/or rugby leadership. An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in organisational contexts is also beneficial as NZMRB works in collaboration with NZR and its members to ensure positive outcomes for Māori through rugby.  Governance or management experience in sport, commercial or not-for-profit entities would also be desirable.  Specific expertise in data & digital, legal or people and culture would also add strength to the NZMRB’s collective capabilities.

Applications for the positions should be made on the form that can be obtained by contacting jane.miller@nzrugby.co.nz. Contact details for the Regional Māori Rugby Boards will be available with the application form, for those wishing to seek the recommendation of one of those Boards.

Applications close Tuesday 14 April 2026 at 5.00pm.
