We are working with a New Zealand owned financial institution to appoint their next lawyer in Wellington – this will be a cross-functional role where you will provide legal governance advice as well as taking ownership of company secretary responsibilities.
We welcome applications from former lawyers who are currently in governance and company secretarial roles and want to return to legal practice alongside governance responsibilities. Alternatively, we are also open to considering lawyers who have worked in relevant areas, such as financial services or corporate law and have acquired some governance skills as part of those roles.

About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
Stepping into this legal, governance, and company secretarial role will provide you with work across a breadth of matters and have unparalleled exposure to the highest levels of the business. You’ll gain invaluable strategic insight, acting as a vital conduit between senior leadership and the board, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
You will also assist the Head of Legal and the wider Legal team to provide legal advice with a focus on corporate governance related matters such as AGMs, and updates to policies.
There will be excellent support and collaboration in the position, and you will also be empowered to develop by giving things a go, working independently and forming your own view. It will be important that you are aware of your limits, and you are able to identify when to escalate issues.
What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu
- 5-10 years of relevant experience in-house or private practice (you must have practised law for some of that time)
- You will either have worked as a company secretary or in a governance role, or have acquired the necessary skills to do the role from working as a lawyer in financial services or corporate law
- Able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the industry – while banking/financial services experience would be advantageous, it is not essential
- An interest in governance
- Proactive and values focused
- Excellent relationship management and communication skills
- Eligible to obtain a New Zealand practising certificate
- Admitted to the Bar in New Zealand
