Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Investments (TMRI) is the commercial arm of the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Trust, the Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) for Rangitāne o Wairarapa and Rangitāne o Tamaki-nui-a-Rua. TMRI is responsible for managing and growing the commercial assets and investment portfolio of the iwi, to ensure long-term financial sustainability and deliver returns to support iwi aspirations.

The Group includes various commercial operations, including subsidiaries such as Tū Mai Rā Energy. TMRI is guided by tikanga, whanaungatanga, and kaitiakitanga while operating to the highest standards of commercial discipline.

The Position

The General Manager is an executive leadership role responsible for financial strategy across the Rangitane Tu Mai Ra Group, investment oversight, and commercial reporting across TMRI’s portfolio. The role ensures sound financial management, manages risk, leads capital planning, and supports growth through prudent investments aligned with iwi values and aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

1. 
Financial Strategy and Management

  • Lead the development of the Group’s financial strategy, ensuring alignment with overall strategic direction.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for TMRI and its subsidiaries.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and reporting obligations.

2. Investment Portfolio Management

  • Monitor performance of the Group’s investment portfolio and make recommendations for strategic adjustments.
  • Evaluate and undertake due diligence on new investment opportunities.
  • Work with external advisors to execute investment decisions in line with risk profile and return expectations.

3. Commercial Oversight and Reporting

  • Prepare accurate, timely financial and commercial reports for the Board.
  • Support subsidiary governance and performance monitoring, particularly Tū Mai Rā Energy.
  • Lead financial modelling and business case development for new projects.

4. Risk and Compliance

  • Maintain an effective risk management framework across the Group’s operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Support internal audit and control functions as needed.

5. Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Contribute to the strategic leadership of TMRI as a member of the executive team.
  • Provide financial mentoring and support to operational managers and subsidiary leads.
  • Develop strong working relationships with the Trust, external partners, auditors, and advisors.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in finance, commerce, accounting or economics (CA/CPA qualification preferred).
  • At least 7 years’ experience in senior financial leadership or investment management roles.
  • Track record of managing commercial portfolios and reporting to governance bodies.
  • Experience working in or with Māori organisations is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent financial analysis and modelling skills.
  • Strong understanding of investment evaluation and portfolio management.
  • Clear and confident communicator with strong report writing ability.
  • Commercially astute with the ability to balance risk and opportunity.
  • Knowledge of financial compliance, audit, and risk frameworks.

  • Understanding of te ao Māori, tikanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Commitment to supporting iwi aspirations through commercial outcomes.
  • Te Reo Māori capability is an advantage.
