Trustee - Executive, Governance

National Hauora Coalition

  • Full Time

About us:

The  National Hauora Coalition Trust (NHC Trust) is the sole shareholder of National Hauora Coalition Limited. Established in 2007, the Trust was formed to represent a nationwide membership of Māori primary healthcare organisations. The founding purpose of the NHC was to advocate for the collective interests of its members within the primary healthcare system.

The organisation’s role evolved quickly, becoming a registered Primary Health Organisation (PHO) in 2011. That same year, NHC also received investment through the national Whānau Ora Business Case to support the development and delivery of the Whānau Ora strategy. In 2012, the members of the company agreed to establish a new legal structure—transitioning from an incorporated society to a charitable trust with a company subsidiary—to better meet the organisation’s growing needs. The National Hauora Coalition Trust was settled in 2012, with Trustees appointed to uphold and advance the charitable purposes (kaupapa) of the Trust. The Trust is a registered charitable organisation, and its Trustees are incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act. National Hauora Coalition Limited functions as the operational arm of the Trust.

NHC is proudly and distinctively a Māori organisation. This identity has shaped its journey—from its beginnings as a coalition of Māori PHOs, to its establishment as a Māori PHO in its own right, and now in the way it operates today as a Whānau Ora commissioning partner in the northern region of the North Island. Central to this is an unwavering belief in whānau and the overarching moemoeā: mana whānau, whānau ora (prosperous families, living well).

About the Role

  • Work collaboratively with fellow Trustees and maintain an effective relationship with the Board of the operational company, National Hauora Coalition Limited.
  • Support the appointment process and performance review of the Company Board Chair.
  • Contribute to the long-term vision and strategy of the NHC, ensuring alignment with the values and aspirations of Māori communities across Aotearoa.
