Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a permanent, full-time Manutaki - Director, Marae Engagement to join the team at Te Herenga Waka Marae.
Key responsibilities include:
- providing strategic leadership and effective management to ensure that Te Herenga Waka Marae services and activities are managed in such a way as to advance Māori learning and teaching, research and engagement needs of the University and the wider community
- providing effective leadership, management and coaching to staff ensuring that they operate effectively as a team
- providing cultural leadership at the marae and contribute effectively to our aspirations for Living Building Certification
- strengthening and maintaining relationships with mana whenua, iwi, hapū, and marae communities - particularly the Taihonoa programme
- acting as the primary liaison between Te Herenga Waka Marae and university leadership, ensuring alignment with Māori values and aspirations.

You will be:
- a motivated, customer-focused individual who understands and believes in the importance of client service and listens to, and understands the needs of internal and external clients
- a strategic thinker who is forward thinking an can accept challenges
- fluent in te reo Māori and competent in tikanga Māori.

Key requirements:
- At least intermediate level in te reo Māori and competent in tikanga Māori
- A sound knowledge of the current tertiary environment and policies, together with an ability to assess emerging directions and challenges in this environment
- Proven understanding of mātauranga Māori principles and practice within a university environment
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
- Experienced people leader who can motivate and develop a strong team culture
