Starting salary: $ 96,307 to $ 113,303 + Superannuation

The role | Te tūnga
We are seeking a Senior Insights Analyst with labour market statistics expertise, strong analytical skills and a desire to mentor other analysts to join our team at Stats NZ. In this role, you'll conduct in-depth analytical work on key national employment data, derive meaningful insights, and provide expert guidance on our core statistical releases.
Reporting to the Unit Manager of the Labour Market Statistics Unit, you'll partner with government agencies and stakeholders to deliver complex research while contributing to the production of the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) and Quarterly Employment Survey (QES). Your ability to contextualise findings within broader economic trends will be essential as you support economists, banks, and other data users across the New Zealand and International data systems.
This position offers the opportunity to apply your subject matter expertise to vital indicators that inform government decisions, business strategies, and public understanding of how people work and earn.
The role is based in Pōneke (Wellington city) as the successful applicant will accompany others to parliament and media briefings each quarter.
This role would suit someone who can bring:
- Extensive knowledge and interest in labour market data and its effect on the wider economy.
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant field (economics, statistics, computer science etc.) that has a significant data component or equivalent experience.
- Examples of technical leadership, e.g. in decision making, problem solving, or leading a technical project or piece of work.
- Experience with relevant quantitative and qualitative research on a range of diverse and complex research questions.
- Strong demonstrated analytical skills, and a talent for telling meaningful stories with data.
- Familiarity with R, SAS or other statistical packages to produce statistics would be advantageous.
- Experience in working to tight deadlines, good time management skills, and ability to adapt and respond to new information.
- Great team-working skills, personal resilience and the confidence to create strong working relationships internally and externally.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing technical capability, coaching and supporting others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills that can explain complex concepts in plain English, including to key stakeholders such as media, economists, and other government departments and ministers during statistical release briefings.
- Demonstrated customer centricity.
- Demonstrated advocacy for, or support of, diversity and inclusion.
- Familiarity or commitment to developing understanding of Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo, Te Ao Māori
