Lead the Uplift of Mātauranga Māori Capability Across Our National Institutions
E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o ngā hau e whā, nau mai, haere mai.
Greetings to the many authorities, voices, and experts of the world.
The Mātauranga Māori directorate sits at the heart of how Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara and the National Library Te Puna Mātauranga honour their obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As Senior Advisor Mātauranga Māori, you will provide strategic, cultural and operational guidance to embed mātauranga Māori thinking and practice across directorates and service design.
You’ll work alongside leaders to align business planning with the Mātauranga Māori strategy, lead capability uplift initiatives, and support the design of services and processes that reflect tikanga, mātauranga Māori and te ao Māori values.
What we’re looking for
We’re seeking a strategic, culturally grounded leader with:
- Demonstrated understanding and practical application of mātauranga Māori, tikanga and te reo Māori
- Experience working with iwi, hapū and Māori organisations, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
- Confidence providing cultural leadership to senior leaders, supporting planning and practice across institutions
- Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi from both Māori and Crown perspectives, and the ability to give it effect
- Experience supporting Māori capability uplift at organisational or sector level
- Familiarity with government policy and planning processes, and how they can be shaped to better serve Māori
- Knowledge of Māori metadata, Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku, and iwi/hapū records is a bonus
You’ll be a natural connector who works across institutions to ensure mātauranga Māori is embedded in a way that is meaningful, sustained and values-driven.
