Ko tā mātou mahi - our work

We are Aotearoa New Zealand’s privacy regulator – a small, Independent Crown Entity established to protect and promote individual privacy.

Ko te tūranga - the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Investigator to join our team in Auckland or Wellington. This is an important front-line role for the Commissioner. You will be investigating complaints from individuals who allege an agency has interfered with their privacy. You will also assist in taking enquiries from the public about their privacy rights and from agencies about their privacy obligations, providing sound advice in a manner that is independent and neutral.

You will notify, investigate, resolve, and manage your own complaint file load, with ongoing mentoring and support from senior staff in the team.

The nature of the work means there will be occasions where you will be responding to challenging issues, so resilience, strong communication (written & oral) and relationship skills are key to thriving in this role.

This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer with some early-stage work experience, or someone with relevant work experience looking to take the next step in their career and take on a stimulating role, where you will be consistently learning and developing your skill set.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu - what you will bring

  • An interest in the Privacy Act and other human rights legislation. Working knowledge of the Act would be an advantage, but is not required
  • A legal qualification or experience in interpreting and applying legislation
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing, and the ability to ask the right questions to quickly obtain required information
  • Strong relationship management skills and emotional intelligence to effectively deal with complex behaviours and people from all walks of life
  • Ability to manage competing priorities with a results-oriented approach
  • Ability to work independently but also be a strong team player working collaboratively with colleagues to problem-solve across a variety of issues
  • An understanding of and ability to recognise and understand key Māori, disability, and other cultural and human rights concepts in a practical setting.

Te painga o te mahi tahi me mātou - what this role offers

  • Supportive team and workplace
  • Professional development and genuine career progression opportunities
  • Engage with compelling and developing privacy issues
  • Flexible working
  • Te reo lessons
  • EAP
  • Three Commissioner days between Christmas and New Year
  • The chance to engage with compelling and developing privacy issues
