Our division: Te Kete Aronui

Encompassing a diverse mix of disciplines and professional programmes, the Division of Humanities/Te Kete Aronui makes a vital contribution to research, teaching and learning at the University of Otago/Te Whare Wānanga o Otago. It is comprised on seven academic units: the Faculty of Law, the College of Education, Te Tumu: School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies, the School of Geography, the School of Performing Arts, the School of Social Sciences and the School of Arts. The Division offers over 40 undergraduate subjects and has just under 5,000 equivalent full-time students, approximately 1,000 tauira Māori taking one or more papers in our Division, and close to 300 staff.

The role/Te mahi

We are looking for a Kaiāwhina Māori to join our team. You will be focused on supporting the Division of Humanities/Te Kete Aronui in realising the goals of the University's Māori Strategic Framework, with a particular focus on supporting the retention and achievement of tauira Māori through providing advice and facilitating access to services, resources, and assistance from the University of Otago.

You will be required to:

  • act as a point of contact and facilitate access to academic and pastoral care for Māori students in Te Kete Aronui/Division of Humanities
  • endeavour to meet with all first year Māori students enrolled in the Division and encourage their engagement with Te Huka Mātauraka/Māori Centre and things Māori at the University
  • liaise with academic units and support services with respect to issues relating to Māori students
  • advise the Manupiki Māori/Associate Dean Māori and Pro-Vice-Chancellor on issues of concern or opportunity relating to tauira Māori
  • work with the Manupiki Māori/Associate Dean Māori to support the implementation of Māori Strategic Framework in the Division
  • establish and maintain a network of appropriate student support contacts across the University and be up-to-date and familiar with services available.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The Kaiāwhina Māori should have confidence in te reo me ngā tikanga Māori and an understanding of the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a tertiary context.

It is also essential to have the following:

  • A high level of experience in cultural settings such as on marae
  • A track record of positive relationships with Māori communities and Māori organisations
  • Project planning and implementation skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

An understanding of, and experience in, tauira Māori networks at the University of Otago/Te Whare Wānanga o Otago, would be an advantage.

This is a part-time (18.75 hours), permanent position, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointments range for this role is $67,566 to $72,086. Top of the range is $77,570, per annum (pro-rata).
