Rotomā No.1 Incorporation was established in 1908 to administer 6,637 acres on the shores of Lake Rotomā. Its financial strength, built through forestry and investments, has allowed for sustainable returns to shareholders and beneficiaries. The revised Strategic Plan aims to grow wealth, sustain whenua, and strengthen shareholder/beneficiary connections, mō ake tonu atu.
Te āhua o Te Tūranga - The nature of the position
In the role of Tumu Whakarae, you will lead strategic execution, investment growth, and operational excellence to protect and enhance Rotomā’s whenua and assets.
- Implement the refreshed Strategic Plan, ensuring future-focused growth
- Strengthen and oversee investment portfolios for long-term sustainability
- Develop innovative strategies to drive income generation
- Lead and mentor teams, fostering capacity and leadership development
- Ensure effective stakeholder engagement, including key iwi and government partnerships
The primary function is to ensure the right operational plans are in place to deliver on the strategic initiatives to ensure the ongoing protection, manage and to enhance, the whenua and assets to the best advantage of their shareholders and beneficiaries.
Building capacity at all levels to ensure Rotomā is well positioned for future growth, you will implement their refreshed Strategic Plan and its goals, focusing on the best way to support whānau in a meaningful and sustainable way, via monitoring the investment portfolio to ensure assets are performing optimally. Continually researching new opportunities to ensure both whenua and assets are creating sustainable wealth for stakeholders now and in the future, you will call on your considerable experience in order to examine current internal structures, systems and processes ensuring they are fit for purpose to deliver on strategic goals.
Executing existing investment plans, you will ensure key financial and operational milestones are delivered, whilst working proactively to research and present new investment opportunities that align with investment portfolios. Furthermore, you will develop substantial measures, and efficient communication strategies, including gaining feedback from whānau, to determine the effectiveness of financial and social initiatives.
Taking an in-depth look at the current operational processes, ensuring they are fit for purpose, you will work in conjunction with the Operations team, to identify continuous improvements to current systems, whilst developing an implementation plan to prioritise and address improvement areas. You will have the confidence to drive business and ensure key stakeholder relationships are developed and maintained.
Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako - Essential skills/experiences for the role
Skills knowledge and experience required for application will include;
- Proven leadership at GM or CEO level of business.
- Leads with tika, pono, and aroha.
- Extensive experience in commercial asset management and portfolio investment growth.
- High levels of financial acumen, experience providing risk mitigation strategies and working with and providing expert advice to Boards.
- Strong understanding of te reo me ōna tikanga and local/regional iwi-hapū dynamics.
- Skilled in strategic execution, policy implementation, and risk management.
- Highly experienced in government funding platforms and stakeholder engagement.
- A highly experienced leader of people supported by a skill set of strong negotiation skills and extensive business leadership.
- Display innovation, enthusiasm, and passion - able to think outside of the box, eager to find new ways to innovate and deliver.
- Ideally holds a degree or MBA (preferably in Māori business).
