STEMM Academy is looking for an experienced Pou Whakahaere – Chief Operations Officer to
drive the operational success of our organisation and support the future of rangatahi Māori in
STEMM.
As our Pou Whakahaere, you will be a key member of our senior leadership team, ensuring our
operations run seamlessly while fostering a high-performance, values-driven culture. You will
oversee core functions including finance, compliance, data and analytics, marketing and
communications, and stakeholder engagement. Your leadership will be critical in optimising our
processes and ensuring Pūhoro continues to thrive and expand its impact.
About Pūhoro STEMM Academy
Pūhoro STEMM Academy is a kaupapa Māori organisation dedicated to increasing Māori
participation and success in STEMM. Operating across 12 regions in Aotearoa, we currently
support over 2,000 rangatahi Māori in high school and tertiary education. Through innovative
programmes, strategic partnerships, and cultural empowerment, we are driving meaningful
change in the STEMM landscape.
The Role
We are seeking a confident and experienced operations leader who can effectively oversee and
support key portfolio areas, including:
- Organisational Strategy & Performance
- Finance & Budgeting
- Risk & Compliance
- Stakeholder & Partnership Management
- Data & Analytics
- Marketing & Communications
- Operations & Administration
You will lead a high-performing team of advisors, including:
- Financial Coordinator
- Marketing & Communications Advisor
- Data Analyst
- Senior Advisor – Operations
As part of Te Pae Urungi (Senior Leadership Team), you will work closely with the Manahautū
(Chief Executive) to shape and execute Pūhoro’s strategic vision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide operational leadership to ensure Pūhoro runs efficiently and sustainably.
- Develop and implement strategies that enhance Pūhoro’s organisational effectiveness.
- Lead financial planning and ensure strong fiscal management across the organisation.
- Oversee compliance, risk management, and governance frameworks.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including iwi, industry partners,
and government agencies. - Foster a high-performing, collaborative team culture that aligns with Pūhoro’s kaupapa
and values.
About You
We are looking for an experienced operational leader with strong strategic acumen and a
passion for making a difference. You will be skilled at managing complex organisational
functions, leading diverse teams, and delivering results in a dynamic environment.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in an operational leadership role.
- Proven expertise in financial management, compliance, and strategic planning.
- Strong track record of leading teams and fostering a performance-driven culture.
- Experience managing relationships with iwi, industry partners, and external
stakeholders. - Ability to drive innovation, improve systems, and enhance organisational efficiency.
- Commitment to kaupapa Māori approaches, with experience in kaupapa Māori
organisations preferred. - Proficiency in Te Reo Māori is desirable but not essential.
Position Details:
Location: Palmerston North (with regional and national travel as required)
Reporting to: Manahautū (Chief Executive)
Contract Type: Permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Trial Period: A 90-day trial period applies
