Sport Northland is seeking applications from uri o Te Tai Tokerau wishing to be considered for one appointed Māori Board position to serve for a three-year term.
Sport Northland, one of 14 Regional Sports Trusts nationwide, is a registered charitable trust with a core purpose to ‘enrich Northlander's lives by inspiring and enabling more movement’. The Trust provides services and activities in organised sport, play, active recreation and events, while also owning and managing McKay Stadium, Kensington Fitness and Northland Sports House, as well as owning (and over-seeing the management of) the Whangarei Aquatic Centre, the Bay of Islands Recreation Centre and the Kauri Coast Community Pool.
The Trust employs over 80 people (55 FTEs), turns over in excess of $9.5m and owns assets of more than $29m.
The Sport Northland Board is purely governance focussed, and in 2018 received recognition from Sport NZ through the awarding of Governance Mark for its sector-leading systems and processes in governance. The eight board meetings held annually are less than three hours in duration and held on a Monday night.
Board members at Sport Northland receive an honorarium and receive other benefits as trustees.
Sport Northland acknowledges that He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni (He Whakaputanga) and Te Tiriti o Waitangi are Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding documents. Sport Northland is committed to upholding the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which includes both the articles (Kāwanatanga, Tino Rangatiratanga, Ōritetanga and Wairuatanga) and the principles (Partnership, Protection and Participation).
The board is committed to partnership with tangata whenua and the protection of Māori culture and taonga. The board values the distinctiveness that tangata whenua bring to physical activity and Northland’s success on a local, regional and world stage and believes that a strong bi-cultural foundation is critical to our identity and wellbeing.
The composition of the board includes three elected trustees, two Northland Mayoral Forum appointed trustees, one Te Kahu O Taonui trustee and two Māori trustees appointed by the Board Appointments Panel.
Sport Northland has a partnership with Te Kahu o Taonui (TKoT), the Tai Tokerau Iwi Chair’s Collective, allowing for a TKoT appointed trustee and for a TKoT representative to be added to the Board Appointments Panel, who will in turn be responsible for recruiting the other two Māori appointed trustees. This application process is for one of those two appointed positions.
IDEAL APPLICANT DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a trustee that has whakapapa to Te Tai Tokerau and that has a deep understanding and commitment to Te Ao Māori.
The applicant should also ideally have the majority of the following:
- Some previous governance experience (ie. have been part of a ‘governance-only’ board)
- Significant capability and fluency in Te Reo Māori me ona Tikanga
- Experience in the application of the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a governance setting
- A passion for on-going governance learning
- Strategic thinking ability/skills
- Financial knowledge/skills
- Play/recreation/sport knowledge, including of the ‘Balance is Better’ philosophy
- A strategic and contributing approach to board-level discussions
- The ability to fit into a ‘governance team’ that focusses more on ‘creating the future’ than ’minding the shop’
