Te āhua o Te Tūranga - The nature of the position

The Pou Māori role offers an opportunity to lead Playcentre Aotearoa’s commitment to Te Tiriti-based practices. Reporting to the Chief Executive, and as an integral member of the SLT, you will champion their commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti, drive the organisation’s strategic direction, and support the development and delivery of the strategy and a programme of activities that help to uplift Playcentre’s overall cultural understanding.

In the role of Pou Māori, you will:

Cultural Strategy & Leadership: Lead Playcentre Aotearoa's cultural strategy, embedding Te Tiriti values and fostering Māori cultural fluency across our network.

Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and maintain relationships with iwi, hapū, marae, Māori organisations, and the wider community, ensuring collaborative partnerships and enduring support.

Strategic Influence: Provide strategic advice to executive leadership, supporting the progress of our Māori strategy.

Programme Development: Oversee and deliver activities that advance our commitment to a Te Tiriti-based model.

Organisational Capability: Guide initiatives to build Māori cultural understanding, supporting staff with resources to ensure culturally responsive practice across all areas of Playcentre Aotearoa.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako - Skills/experience required:

  • Extensive experience delivering strategic initiatives with Māori communities, iwi, and across complex organisations.
  • Proven experience leading successful stakeholder engagement and building relationships with diverse partners.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Māori Studies, Project Management, or related fields.
  • Deep understanding of Te Ao Māori me ōna tikanga, and experience in guiding organisations through bicultural integration.
  • Strong organisational skills, strategic thinking, and a solutions-focused mindset.
  • Proficiency in planning, organising, and managing time efficiently, coupled with a motivated, positive, and results-oriented approach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and adaptability to new technologies.
  • Commitment to Playcentre Aotearoa's philosophy and values.
