Strategic Advisor - Mana Whenua ($92,000 - $108,000)

He angitūtanga | The Opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person who is committed to fostering Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori. Someone who can provide a link between hapu/iwi and council through education and communication.
You’ll be working closely with mana whenua within the Rangitīkei rohe, fostering connectedness while maintaining the integrity of individual hapu/iwi.

This is a full-time permanent role based in Marton.

He aha te mahi| What you will do

  • Provide day to day cultural and strategic advice to elected members and council staff to create and maintain respectful relationships with mana whenua and Council
  • Encourage, support, and lead Council-wide training on Te Ao Māori, Te Reo, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Tikanga Māori
  • Develop/provide advice on the development of policies, procedures, systems and processes that improve the effectiveness of Māori involvement in Council
  • Develop and implement organisation-wide Iwi/Hapū policies, plans and strategies that provide the direction to ensure iwi are engaged in Council’s projects and programmes
  • Coordinate, provide advice and support public consultations and engagement processes ensuring authenticity to iwi

  • Knowledge and understating of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Mātauranga Māori
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills in English and Te Reo Māori
  • Understanding of Tikanga Māori protocol
  • High level of understanding of the principles of planning and policy development
  • Ability to analyse and interpret policies, procedures and regulations
  • Knowledge of the Local Government Act 2002
  • A strong strategic approach to business planning and problem solving
