Mā Te Huruhuru is motivated by the desire to pass generational matauranga and knowledge on, and to continue moving towards a goal of connecting taitamariki to self, culture and their purpose.

We achieve this through transformative, supported kaupapa Māori youth housing in a papakainga setting. He Paa Piringa provides a safe, secure, and supportive environment where taitamarik can reach new heights of transformation.

About the role

The primary purpose of the Social Worker role is to support and enhance the well-being of taitamariki who have faced homelessness.

Specifically, this position focuses on working with vulnerable taitamariki who have complex social issues and backgrounds, helping them reconnect with whanau, self, and healing while building on individual skills and aspirations.

Skills and experience

  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in social work with vulnerable taitamariki, including those with trauma histories.
  • 3 years plus experience in the relevant industry and sector is a must!
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Te Reo and Tikanga is highly advantageous. • You will be able to operate effectively in a Māori cultural setting and have an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Knowledge and experience of trauma-informed practice models
  • Ability to make sound professional judgments tailoring solutions to individual circumstances.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of people to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt behaviour to reflect diverse situations and people, and deal positively with difficult situations and people
  • Know when to seek guidance from others on matters of operational policy and procedure.
  • Effectively manage time and workload, taking responsibility for learning and development, while maintaining a balance between work and personal life
  • Full drivers licence

You Must have Full SWRB registration and;

A current annual practising certificate or the eligibility to obtain one.

He Paa Piringa runs a 24/7 operation with staff working various shift times. The Social Worker will work typical business hours Mon - Fri. Rostered on-call support may be required.

In this role, you need to have the right to work in New Zealand, either as a NZ citizen or permanent resident or by holding a work visa. You will also need to be able to meet the safety checking and police vetting requirements required under the Children's Act and pass a Drug and Alcohol test.
