About the Committee:

The Māori Plant Varieties Committee is being established in accordance with the Plant Variety Rights Act 2022 (the Act) to carry out procedures that recognise and protect kaitiaki relationships with specific plant species.

The Committee will:

  • consider Plant Variety Right (PVR) applications referred to it by the PVR Commissioner and make decisions under Part 5 of the Act;
  • issue engagement guidelines and provide advice to applicants for a PVR and kaitiaki;
  • advise the Commissioner whether the use or approval of a proposed denomination is likely to be offensive to Māori;
  • provide advice to the Commissioner on any information that may be relevant to application of the criteria listed in section 32 for granting a PVR; and
  • undertake other responsibilities outlined in the Act.

Mō te Komiti:

E whakatūria ana te Komiti mō Ngā Momo Tipu Māori i raro i te Plant Variety Rights Act 2022 (te Ture) hei whakahaere i ngā hātepe e whakamana, e tiaki hoki i ngā hononga kaitiaki ki ngā momo tipu tauwhāiti.

Ko te tā Komiti he:

  • whiriwhiri i ngā tono Tika Momo Tipu (PVR) kua tonoa atu e te Kōmihana PVR me te tuku whakatau i raro i te Wāhanga 5 o te Ture;
  • tuku aratohu kōrerorero tahi me te tuku tohutohu ki ngā kaitono mō tētahi PVR, kaitiaki hoki;
  • whakamōhio atu ki te Kōmihana mēnā ka pāpōuri pea te Māori ki te whakamahinga, te whakaaetanga rānei o tētahi tautapanga;
  • tuku tohutohu ki te Kōmihana mō ngā mōhiohio ka hāngai pea ki te tono o te paearu kua rārangitia ki te wāhanga 32 mō te tuku i tētahi PVR; me te
  • whakahaere i tētahi atu kawenga i roto i te Ture.

Skills and experience:

We encourage expressions of interest from those who have:

  • knowledge of mātauranga Māori (Māori traditional knowledge), tikanga Māori (Māori protocol and culture), te ao Māori (the Māori world view), and taonga species.
  • mana, community standing, skills, knowledge, and experience to participate effectively in the Committee;
  • and one or more of the complementary competencies detailed in the position description.
