Te Wānanga o Aotearoa

  • Permanent Full Time
  • Gisborne
  • If you’re an experienced education leader eager for a change of lifestyle in a stunning part of New Zealand OR a Tairāwhiti local looking for a fresh challenge, this is it!
  • Permanent/full-time position (37.5 hours per week).
  • Salary range $87,694 to $116,925 plus free medical/life insurance and assistance with relocation costs for those outside of Gisborne.

About us

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA) is one of the world’s largest indigenous tertiary institutions, and the second largest tertiary educator in New Zealand.  We’ve been providing transformational education opportunities to Kiwi’s for over 35 years.  Our vision of ‘Whānau transformation through education’ drives our commitment to being at the forefront of education underpinned by Māori culture and values.

Located in Tairāwhiti Gisborne on the beautiful East Coast, our Whirikoka Campus is a true community hub for Māori education, welcoming tamariki, Kaumātua and everyone in between into our learning space.  Our kaimahi (employees) enjoy a whānau-friendly workplace, allowing them to balance family and work commitments and enjoy all that the region has to offer.  Our whānau are cohesive, engaged and motivated to give back to their tauira (students) and the wider community through the programmes they deliver.  We’ve got great facilities and a great team; now all we need is you!

About the role

As Kaiarataki Ako, your key focus will be the implementation, management and monitoring of programmes across the takiwā (region).  In doing this, you’ll provide effective leadership and management to a team of Kaiwhakahaere Ako (Managers – Educational Delivery) located in Gisborne, Ōpōtiki, Kawerau and Whakatāne.

More than the day-to-day requirements of the position, which are outlined in the position description (link below), this is a very real chance for you to be a fresh set of eyes on things.  We think there’s lots of opportunity to take things to the next level, so we’ll be looking to you for guidance.  You’ll be empowered by the takiwā leadership team, and have the support of your direct reports, to review what we’re currently doing and make changes that allow us to enhance the tauira experience and future-proof our academic programmes.

About you

You’ll be an exceptional people leader who has successfully coached and developed highly capable, engaged teams.  You’ll be able to demonstrate how you’ve achieved results through others, guided and empowered managers to be successful leaders, and created a culture of trust and accountability where people take ownership of their results.

Your experience as a tertiary educator will give you the credibility and understanding you need to influence others, make sound decisions and guide improvements in your space.  That experience will also allow you to effectively monitor and measure programmes, analyse and report on results, and ensure compliance and best practice at every turn.

This role will require you to travel to other campuses within the takiwā, so a full drivers licence and the flexibility for occasional overnight stays are required.

While not essential, a Masters’ qualification in Education or a Post Graduate qualification in education or research would be ideal as would experience delivering programmes in a kaupapa Māori environment.  Fluency in te reo Māori would also be very useful in this position but, again, is not essential; more important is your willingness to participate in cultural activities and develop an understanding of Āhuatanga Māori (values, culture and tikanga).

If we’ve outlined a role that matches your capabilities and aspirations, and you’re looking for a chance to lead education delivery in a truly wonderful part of New Zealand, apply today!  We look forward to meeting you.
