Our recently established Policy Implementation and Delivery (PID) Group within MfE have a stewardship role in enabling policy into action on the ground. Our key focus is on working with Māori/Iwi, Local government, industry etc to identify outcomes, bring together diversity of thinking and different perspectives to find solutions.
Mō tēnei tūrangi mahi | About this role
The focus of the Principal Advisor – Freshwater Farm Plans Technical Lead role will be on providing strategic advice, technical expertise and leading work to establish the systems and structures to implement Freshwater Farm Plans, as part of the Government's Essential Freshwater Package across Aotearoa New Zealand.
This role will provide technical input and leadership across the programme as we work to develop, test and pilot the Freshwater Farm Plan system prior to rolling-out the system in 2023. As such, your extensive knowledge of primary industry and resource management will be critical to your success in this role.
A skilled relationship manager, you will work closely with internal and external partners, including industry representatives, local government, tangata whenua and farmers and growers as well as senior leadership across the Ministry to drive the establishment of the Freshwater Farm Plan system.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
To be successful, we are calling on candidates who can bring a mix of the following skills and expertise to lead the establishment of the Freshwater Farm Plan system:
- Commitment to developing your cultural capability and capacity in te ao Māori
- A highly respected technical expert in farming systems and resource management and thought of as a leader in your field
- A high-level understanding and direct experience of central government processes, systems and tools
- Proven ability to lead complex cross-governmental policy development and/or implementation programmes and represent your organisation across Government
- The ability to lead people in the completion of project work, working in a collaborative way with each team members line manager
- Experience mentoring people within an organisation and sector
- Superior communication, relationship management, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills – including the ability to explain complex issues clearly to a range of audiences, including non-technical experts.
The salary range for this role is from $155,491 up to $190,044 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
