Ko wai mātou? – Who are we?
Perehipitiriāna Āwhina – Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN) is one of NZ’s largest not-for-profit service providers that provides social and health and disability services for New Zealand’s most vulnerable people, including victims of family violence, tamariki and whānau, older people, and those with disabilities and injuries. Operating across the upper North Island, their vision is ‘A better life for everyone’, which means they are there for whānau and communities, with the goal of transforming generations.
PSN is the parent organisation for some of New Zealand’s well-known Support Services and has four main service delivery divisions, including:
- Enliven – provides home and community-based support for older and disabled
- Shine – provides a range of crisis and programme services to help victims of domestic violence become safe, and perpetrators to change their behaviour.
- Lifeline – provides a 24/7 helpline for people experiencing distress, together with services to businesses and communities to upskill, support and activate community connection.
- Family Works – provides social work and counselling support to tamariki and whānau, particularly in the school setting, around family violence and whānau resilience.
Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position.
The GM Engagement is a critical partner to the CEO and Leadership Team in the transformation of PSN’s culture, profile, and people. Positioned at the executive table, you will be a key contributor involved in all aspects of PSN’s strategy and operations. The role will work across PSN’s network of services, and coach the General Managers and their teams to translate values into action, build leadership capabilities and honour the professionalism and dedication of all staff – so that PSN can continue ‘to be there for whānau and communities when they need us’.
The intent of this position is to provide strategic oversight to all organisational functions that relate to engaging with people. This means a focus across internal and external functions, actively supported by specialist managers across these functions. Taking the lead role empowering these managers and their teams, you will be mentoring both teams and individuals to deliver high quality support services for staff and managers.
Designing and implementing a stakeholder plan to lift strategic engagement and profile externally, you will be charged with maintaining a strong external network, especially with government and key sector stakeholders. Additionally, you will take a proactive stance in the development of opportunities for the organisation to have a ‘voice’ on issues relating to key mahi.
Leading with authenticity and mana, you will be fostering a one team approach that lines up with PSN’s Vision, Mission and Values, that are premised on a faith-based approach and a commitment to tangata whenua. Working with experienced senior leaders in the People & Culture, Health & Safety, and Comms & Marketing teams, your own leadership style will foster and grow them and their teams. You will be a champion for flexibility, inclusion, staff safety and wellbeing – and your decision making will be values-led. Providing strategic oversight in the development and execution of People and Culture strategies, will see you providing support to the leadership team on people-related matters, and providing advice and mentoring to leaders within the organisation.
A key part of the role is working alongside the Pou Ārahi to develop and implement te ao Māori frameworks. Your understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti o Waitangi will be evidenced through your past examples of working in partnership with tangata whenua.
Significant experience working at a senior level in an organisational change or strategic comms role, with relevant tertiary qualifications is required. In addition, a high degree of comfort in presenting publicly to Ministers, senior officials and media is sought.

You will be well positioned to apply if you are qualified in Organisational Development, Human Resources, Communications or Marketing.
Skills, experience, and competencies required for application are to include:
- Experience in the development, implementation, and review of corporate strategy including in the oversight of communications planning; marketing; health, safety, and wellbeing excellence; and people and culture strategies.
- Extensive experience working in people and leadership of teams, supported by past skills in coaching and mentoring.
- A skill set in leading strategic change leadership.
- A sound cultural competency, including confidence in the use of te reo me ōna tikanga.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and experience communicating with Boards and senior Executives.
- High levels of self-motivation, be self-confident and self-directing.
- Can demonstrate working within constructive partnerships with peers by presenting clear and convincing rationale for ideas and changes.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence and enable.
- The experience to effectively manage internal and external stakeholders through trust, advocacy, and collaboration, with skills in the management of complex sets of relationships with tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Humility, and the natural capability to uplift the mana of others.
Knowledge and experience working in the New Zealand not-for-profit sector is highly advantageous as is your ability to demonstrate Te Tiriti in action.
