Te Mana Hauora Māori | The Māori Health Authority (MHA) has been set up to enable greater Māori participation in the design and delivery of health services for the betterment of all.  This will be achieved by embedding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as central components of Aotearoa New Zealand’s health reform.

The MHA will play an essential role in enhancing Māori rangatiratanga, ensuring everyone has the equitable access to healthcare and supporting whānau to take control of their own health and wellbeing. The MHA will work in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Health New Zealand (HNZ) and enable Iwi-Māori Partnerships Boards (IMPBs), Māori health providers, iwi, hapū and Māori communities to achieve Māori health aspirations.

The MHA will be the primary source of strategy and policy for hauora Māori. The organisation will identify and monitor equitable health outcomes and will be responsible for leading the development of the Māori health workforce and the direct commissioning of kaupapa Māori services. The newly created role of Deputy Chief Executive – Mātauranga Māori is a critical role that will help transform the sector through a Te Ao Māori worldview and the opportunity to influence inequity within the system.

Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position

This newly created position, will lead the establishment of the Mātauranga Māori function at MHA. A key focus of this pivotal role will be to ensure that Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori are embedded across all decision making and affirming alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles. An established people leader, you will leverage your Māori cultural intelligence and understanding of Māori worldview to enable the organisation to build strong cultural foundationsEmploying Mātauranga Māori expertise you will be responsible for developing and delivering strategy ensuring that Te Ao Māori worldview and mātauranga Māori is considered in all MHA strategy and decision making.

Enabling whānau voice will see you develop and deliver strategy that provides clear communication mechanisms to capture and deliver upon whānau, hapū and iwi health aspirations. With your deep understanding of Te Tiriti, you will provide strategic and policy leadership related to the implementation of Te Tiriti, across MHA and in conjunction with HNZ, creating a framework to inform planning, policy, delivery, and monitoring of the health system.

You will role model best practice in te reo me ōna tikanga and create and deliver a strategy to develop capability across MHA. The role requires deep experience in advising on kawa, and tikanga and a proven ability to work with iwi, hapū, whānau and non-Māori.

This position can be based in either Auckland or Wellington and will include regular domestic travel.
