  • Two casual roles available for grabs that would suit your life style
  • Based at the Wellington Botanic Garden ki paekākā and Ōtari-Wilton's Bush

We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate people to join us on a casual basis at the Wellington Gardens.

The purpose of the team that you will be joining is to prepare for and deliver environmental education for Wellington Gardens and thus contributing to our vision of Wellington 2040: Smart Capital in particular our Eco city initiative.

In this role, you will be responsible for teaching large groups attending The Discovery Garden and Ōtari Education Programmes. This exciting, garden Te Kaapuia o Te Waoku (We are all part of nature), demonstrates the importance of plants in our lives to the future of our cities and society.

You will be part of a team inspiring children, families and other visitors to explore, discover and connect with our urban environment; to be advocates for green cities and towards sustainable urban living. You will work closely with the Botanic Gardens Educator in delivery and development of education programmes.

Our ideal candidates will have:

  • demonstrable experience in environmental education and working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • teaching experience and skills in managing groups of learners
  • an understanding of the roles and functions of modern botanic gardens and of the New Zealand Curriculum are preferred
  • skills working with plants for food, fibre, construction or medicine are desirable (e.g. weaving, herbal remedies, woodcraft etc.).

This is a team where getting stuck in, great communication skills and a passion for engaging will be the key to success of the education programmes. At times you will work in the wider Botanic Garden and Bolton Street Cemetery in support of educational activities developed for these sites.

Please note that shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo pre-employment drug screening and musculoskeletal assessment along with a police vetting clearance to work with children. A full, clean drivers licence is required for this role.

Applications close Sunday, 30 January 2022.

All applications must be submitted online but hitting the apply button below. If you have any questions about the role, you can contact Raydeen Cuffe, Visitor Experience Team Manager at
