  • A position of influence helping shape NZ for future generations.
  • Lead through change creating positive impacts for NZ communities.
  • Engage at the highest levels of both central and local government.

Local government is at an inflection point - societal and environmental change and transformational reforms are having a material impact on the future of local government and the role of local democracy in Aotearoa.

Local Government New Zealand, Te Kāhui Kaunihera ō Aotearoa, provides the vision and voice for local democracy.  We have an ambitious new vision to create the most active and inclusive local democracy in the world and we need a fantastic senior leader to challenge our thinking, shepherd our people and lead the strategic policy and advocacy agenda at this critical time to help shape the future of local democracy and governance across the country.  You will be highly influential with proven relationship skills at senior levels of central and local government.  You will also be a critical thinker, supreme strategist and consummate relationship builder – and you need to be able to turn your ideas into reality.

To be successful in this position, you must have senior leadership experience along with in-depth knowledge of the policy environment. You will be a thought-leader with intellectual curiosity and rigor, be able to grasp and work with the systemic impact of the reform agenda and you’ll see both the opportunity as well as the challenge in the current environment.  Being well connected in government circles is highly desirable.

You will have outstanding relationship skills, be a strong advocate for local democracy, and be able to build credible and valued relationships with our members’ right across Aotearoa. You’ll need to be a strong people leader who is well versed in leading through change.

This is a rare opportunity to join an important organisation at a fascinating time in local government history. This is a role that will have a truly positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our communities for generations to come – and a genuinely supportive and enabling environment in which to make that change happen!

Entry to New Zealand from all countries remains strictly controlled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. You may only apply for this role if you have the right to work in New Zealand. For information about New Zealand work or residence visas, please visit www.immigration.govt.nz
