Two Independent Directors

  • Water network governance

Wellington Water is owned by the six Councils of the Wellington region: Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, the South Wairarapa District Council, and the Greater Wellington Regional Council. With combined assets of over $6bn Wellington Water manages and operates these to provide people with safe drinking water, treat their wastewater and discharge it safely back into the environment, and manage the flows of stormwater in ways that minimise the risk to people and property.

The company is governed by a Board of Independent Directors and the Wellington Water Committee represents the shareholding Councils and mana whenua in the region.

With around 200 full-time employees, Wellington Water represents the largest organisation in water infrastructure services management in New Zealand outside of Auckland. As asset managers, Wellington Water provides advice to the shareholding councils on managing and investing in their assets. The council owners’ present focuses are sustainable supply of water, improving environmental water quality, reducing carbon outputs, and investing in existing assets. Additional priorities include improving network resilience and addressing flooding issues. Alongside these the Government’s Three Waters Reform Programme will be a significant focus for Wellington Water in the next two to three years as will a smooth transition to the new proposed water entity.

We are searching for two Independent Directors to join the Board. Ideally you will be an experienced director with experience of local government, competent in the concepts of te ao Māori, familiar with best practice asset management, and have an understanding of issues facing the water sector, of machinery of Government, and governance experience and responsibilities. It would be preferable that you are a resident in one of the six regions represented by Wellington Water.
