Counsellor Position

The Lower Hutt Women’s Centre is looking for an experienced Counsellor to join our small team. This is a part-time role, 20 hours a week. 

In this role you will:

  • provide safe and effective counselling to people that identify as women 
  • work with the wider team to support the running of the Centre
  • manage the administration of your appointments and counselling statistics
  • support the growth, self-determination, and wellbeing of women and their whānau
  • work with women to confront oppression in their lives
  • counsel women to achieve their short and long-term personal goals
  • collaboratively assess risk and safety and review counselling plans

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification and professional body membership
  • experience with counselling women
  • a commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi 
  • an ethically and culturally sensitive approach to all peoples
  • awareness of how social injustice impacts the lives of women, children, whānau, and communities
  • an understanding of power, control, and abusive dynamics in family and interpersonal relationships
  • clinical experience in working with trauma, mental health conditions, addiction, grief, and loss
  • a trauma-informed lens and a strengths-based empowerment approach
  • a friendly, empathetic, and approachable manner
  • clear communication, presence, and listening skills
  • a willingness to participate in peer supervision and service delivery development 
  • an ability to build and develop professional referral networks
  • strong record keeping and organisational skills
  • experience in counselling remotely via the phone or video calls (preferable but not essential)
  • experience in facilitating educational and therapeutic groups (preferable but not essential)
  • healthy self-care and resilience strategies
