About the QLDC: The Queenstown Lakes District Council plays a vital part in maintaining and enhancing the quality of the district’s environment. It also has a central role in development and regulation and provides high quality services and infrastructure to residents and visitors. With an employed workforce of approx. 500 employees, the range and types of work carried out are extensive and complex, becoming increasingly so as the district continue to grow.

About the Role:

The primary purpose of the Associate Counsel is to provide sound legal advice in the areas of Environmental, Resource Management, Regulatory and Litigation law. The matters that fall within these areas include:

- Resource consents 
- Consenting of infrastructure projects
- Designations 
- Policy Planning 
- Affordable Housing/Urban Development Authority
- Building Act Compliance 
- Bylaws
- Enforcement and Monitoring 
- Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act and Privacy Compliance 

Within these areas, you will manage files autonomously and mentor the Legal Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel, forming the Resource Management and Regulatory side of the Legal team. You will report to and work closely with the General Counsel.

You will be expected to build rapport and foster relationships with external legal providers, drive performance and manage cost efficiencies when assigning work. Working closely with these providers will help the team deliver the work, providing more opportunities to work on wider legal matters.

Living and working in Queenstown is preferred. Remote candidates will be considered, though this is not a long-term preference. Flexible working conditions are open for discussion. Key Selection Criteria:

• LLB and supporting academic transcripts
• NZ practising certificate 
• 7+ years of legal experience within local government, litigation, regulatory, and resource management law 
• Committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and resolving legal issues relevant to Māori
• Adding personal value to a small workplace that enjoy spending time together 
• Has a collaborative approach to solving complex legal issues that affect the wider community
