We are looking for a high-performing Adviser to join the Economic Regulation team at Te Manatū Waka, Ministry of Transport. Te Manatū Waka is the Government’s lead adviser on transport policy. We are a small but agile Ministry – which is perfect if you are after a chance to shine!

The Economic Regulation team enables people and businesses to connect, innovate, and access markets. The team maintains and expands access to domestic and international markets including supporting community connectivity and regional development. We create incentives through legislation and regulation to encourage continual improvements to services and investment in the sector, while putting users’ interests, (including their safety and security) at heart. We explore and assess the benefits of emerging transport technologies, working closely with others to ensure that our legislation is enabling of new technology.

Policy Advisers in the team are responsible for leading the provision of high quality analysis and advice on Government policy issues and supporting the delivery of its work programme, including contribution to stakeholder relationships, projects, and processes; and representing the Ministry effectively while working with others across Government and with the wider sector.

As a member of the team you will also:

  • Work with Crown agencies to ensure that transport legislation including primary, secondary and tertiary remain fit-for-purpose and, where appropriate, in harmony with international developments
  • Contribute towards the management of key regulatory functions and requirements
  • Respond professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and Ministers.

Policy Advisers also get the opportunity to broaden their policy experience and play a significant role in cross-agency priority initiatives.  All Policy Advisers are provided with the opportunity to develop their policy craft and leadership skills in a supportive environment.

Being an Adviser

We are looking for a self-starter with a great attitude, who will be comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment. You will be a keen learner, someone who delivers exceptional outcomes, and demonstrates a great attitude and genuine desire to grow.

As an Adviser, you’ll join us from a background where you’ve gained solid experience in problem identification, assessing options, and making recommendations around possible courses of action.  Experience in managing projects is desirable.   

You will have some experience providing advice in a government, legal, consulting or industry setting. Irrespective of your background, you will be regarded as a keen learner, someone who delivers exceptional outcomes, and demonstrate a great attitude and genuine desire to grow.

Our ideal candidate will need to be an analytical thinker, with strong problem-solving skills, along with this you will have excellent written and oral skills, you will be someone who builds trust and credibility easily, is comfortable working with a range of stakeholders, and have great relationship management skills.

The salary step range for this role is $71,172 – $94,896, depending on experience
