Our Council is committed to ensuring mana whenua and Māori participate meaningfully and contribute to, strategic Council decisions. We envision a future where Wellingtonwill be a centre for creativity, exploration and innovation, and the role of iwi and the wider Māori community in realising this future will be huge.
Te whāinga roa: The opportunity
This is such an exciting & transformational time to join our newly formed Mataaho Aronui - Māori Strategic Outcomes Group, responsible for providing WCC with a strategic Māori voice and increased internal capability whilst raising its prominence within the organisation.
We are building our future team, focussed on three key Māori specific areas:
- Māori Strategic Partnerships
- Maori Strategic Advice
- Māori Success
This will be the first step in supporting and enabling WCC to strengthen our relationships, presence and intelligence, so that Māori are engaged proactively in Wellington's future coupled with enabling the whole organisation to contribute to the effective implementation of our services, ensuring we are aligned to our wider goals for Māori - meeting the principles of the Tiriti o Waitangi.
The prime focus of this newly created position is to lead and inspire the team that weaves te ao Māori knowledge and research together so that Māori prosper as Māori. You will proactively contribute to and influence internal policies and procedures that reflects a Māori influence and contribution.
Key programmes of work will focus on improving the success of Māori in the City, and will encompass:
- Driving the Māori Strategic work programme for Te Mataaho Aronui.
- Provide high level strategic support and thought leadership across Council to support the organisation to respond well to the needs of Māori.
- Ensure opportunities exist for Māori to contribute to deciding the future of the city.
Te tangata e tika ana: About you
You will be an influential passionate people leader and champion of building cultural capacity within the organisation; with your extensive knowledge of Te Ao Māori Strategy & excellent understanding of Māori Frameworks you will drive the change in how we deliver services and programmes of work. You will be a big-picture thinker and innovator, as well as a very practical implementer. Experience in a public sector and/or local government context will be preferable. Your relationship and people skills will be second to none, you'll seamlessly build relationships in a political environment with confidence. To really shine, you'll need strengths in engagement, communication and empathy and can take people along with you in the journey as we strive to deliver our vison for the city.
