Edgecumbe is one of only two sites in New Zealand that manufactures sodium caseinate for Fonterra's customers to use in a variety of nutritional products. It is also the only site that produces calcium caseinate.

The Opportunity  

Do you enjoy tinkering with cars, or anything else mechanical for that matter? Would you like to earn while you learn and gain an NZQA recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering? If the answer is yes, you have an awesome opportunity to begin your career with the industry’s biggest dairy exporter and train with the best in their field. 

Being a Mechanical Apprentice at our Edgecumbe site, means you’ll be trained using a mixture of different skill sets where our sites have highly automated plants and equipment. You’ll be using advanced systems and gaining exposure to some of the industry's most modern technology.  Initially, you’ll be working on-site from Monday to Friday and will eventually progress into our shift pattern. The theory-based work will be spread across the duration of your apprenticeship so that it aligns to the practical work you’ll be involved in.   

What you’ll bring and develop  

We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about the mechanical trade as well as the technical and creative parts of the work you get to be a part of each day. The perfect fit will be someone who enjoys working in a team, has a positive attitude, shows initiative and can think on their feet when a problem pops up. Your confidence to speak up and ask questions matched with your strong work ethic will help boost you through your learning journey with us.  

Any and all experience in work-related fields, voluntary or school experience and involvement in community groups will be a huge advantage as these are the fundamental skills we're looking to kick-start you in the apprenticeship.  

Other key skills and experience include:    

  • Achieved or in the process of attaining minimum of NCEA Level 2 Maths or NZQA Level 3 Certificate in a relevant field  
  • Enjoys problem solving, a quick learner who adapts to change easily    
  • Strong mechanical aptitude    
  • A minimum restricted driver’s license is required with a view to secure your full  
  • Tech-savviness 
  • Completion of a pre-trade course in a related subject is desired but not essential
