About this role

Our Design Director is away on primary caregiver leave and we’re on the hunt for an experienced, detail-driven designer to fill her shoes. This role is a six month contract, working alongside the other Design Director, Content Director, and our Head of Experience to lead the Experience Team.

Our Experience Team includes researchers, designers, and writers all working together to solve problems. As Design Director, you’ll use your creative and strategic know-how to oversee and coach the team, ensuring high-quality practices and outcomes. You won’t be shy to get on the tools yourself and experiment with the team, leading to a beautiful execution of designs.

You'll collaborate with other directors in guiding and evolving human-centred, industry-leading design with a focus on digital branding, design systems, and high-quality front-end implementation.

You’ll also direct and contribute to specified projects, engaging directly with clients to ensure successful communication of outputs and methodologies, and supporting the team in creating beautiful, usable, useful digital products and experiences that enable change for good.

In this role you'll:

  • use your expertise and passion for design as a craft
  • have an entrepreneurial and product minded approach to problem solving
  • have innovation strength, producing strategic ideas for client work and internal thought starter projects under Springlabs
  • understand our clients’ business needs and the needs of their customers/users, using this to inform digital strategy, branding, design and user experience
  • lead, support and coach the team on the communication of work back to the client, and across all levels of engagement: creative, presentation, strategic, management and team
  • ideally have experience and knowledge of te ao Māori, particularly from a design perspective
  • work with account/project managers in project planning, leading client relationships and ensuring the work is delivered on time and budget, meeting scope expectations.
  • collaborate closely with other disciplines to ensure efficient and high-quality delivery of client projects, particularly supporting front-end in the implementation of UI, interactive, and motion design.
  • be a highly skilled guru of our tools, providing design operations support to the team for Figma and Dropbox
  • contribute to high quality proposals and pitches for new projects and clients
  • work closely with fellow directors to mentor, influence, inspire and work with the practitioners to ensure that they are constantly engaged, improving, learning and genuinely cared for.

Who are you?

  • Strategic thinker and manager with sound analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proven leadership ability, vision, and flexibility to initiate change.
  • Collaborative, creating a sense of unity and enabling everyone to contribute.
  • Warm and authentic, with people at the heart of what you do.
  • Curious and passionate, with initiative and a willingness to go the extra mile.
  • BA in Digital, Interactive, or Graphic Design, or related experience.
  • 8+ years experience in Interactive Design, preferably having experience with a leading agency or consultancy.

Other experience we'd love:

  • User research, business or cultural transformation experience.
  • Experience collaborating with front-end development teams.
