Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the complexity of Tāngata whenua issues and challenges, particularly in regard to Te Tai Tokerau.

  • Based in Whangārei.

This highly innovative Council has embedded a Māori responsiveness and engagement strategy; as a cornerstone to its organisation.

As such, this position has been created to assist the Kaiwhakahaere – Hononga Māori providing support and advice both inside the organisation and beyond in relation to services for Tāngata whenua.  The role provides advice on Te Ao Māori, tikanga o Te Tai Tokerau and on matters affecting Tāngata whenua across the organisation.

In addition, the position facilitates and further develops the solid relationships between Te Tai Tokerau Māori and council, utilising strong national and regional relationships which will assist the council, hapū and iwi relationships.

Provide cultural advice and support to Councilors and senior management during events where tikanga Māori is necessary to establish and maintain respectful relationships with Iwi and hapū.  Develop the profile and understanding of Māori society in Te Tai Tokerau within council and the wider community; in relation to the services council provides, communicating these to management and working to facilitate resolution of any issues.

Enabling and promoting council wide training on Te Ao Māori, Te Reo and marae protocol, you will develop Te Reo skills amongst staff members by coordinating and providing a programme to build a capable workforce that engages appropriately with Iwi and hapū.

Skills and experience required by the applicant are to include:

  • A high-level competency in Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a similar role including in local or national government.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of policies and training programme
  • A demonstration of experience in successfully working and engaging with iwi, government, community, and public interest groups.
  • An in-depth knowledge Treaty of Waitangi in national and regional affairs in both a historical and contemporary settings.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and decision-making skill
  • Track record of results, delivering innovation and success in complex environments.
  • The demonstrated skill as a people influencer.
  • Well-developed report writing and computer skills.

The status and standing as an orator; the ability to take on the role of speaker (as necessary) and experience in leading senior leader representatives within a Marae, Tikanga setting providing translation, support and guidance is a pre-requisite for the position.

In addition, an in depth understanding of tikanga o Te Tai Tokerau and Te ao Māori as they apply in Te Tai Tokerau is fundamental to application. This position will see you with the ability to navigate and transcend two, often opposing world views.  Manoeuvring through complex political situations effectively, you are sensitive to how people and the organisational function currently works, whilst having the skills and mana to support, and encourage employees at all levels to become more attuned to a Māori way of working.

With an innate understanding of people with high levels of emotional and social intelligence, you will have the ability to help position Council positively with the achievement of delivering high-quality service to hapū and iwi.
