Te Pūkenga is the new entity responsible for ensuring equity and excellence for all New Zealanders in the area of vocational education.  Its key functions include; improving outcomes for Māori and Māori communities in collaboration with Māori and iwi partners and stakeholders; improving the consistency of vocational education and training; meeting the needs of the regions of New Zealand and their learners, industries, employers and communities; ensuring that every learner receives what they need to be successful, and to improve outcomes in the tertiary education system as a whole.

Te Pūkenga is searching for people who have what it takes to lead change and create a thriving Aotearoa where we all prosper. To amplify the change, we are building a team of courageous leaders and change agents within the Partnerships and Equity division. Te Tiriti o Waitangi will be your ‘waka’ and equity will be your ‘compass’.  To succeed in this role, you must be deeply committed to equity and inclusion for underserved groups, and align with the organisation’s Tiriti-based approach to equity.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Partnerships and Equity, the Kaikōkiri - Director of Equity role requires a subject matter expert in equity to lead an ambitious work programme that includes:

  • Development of the equity strategy for Te Pūkenga
  • Development of equity tools, targets, quality assurance and performance monitoring processes for Te Pūkenga
  • Activation of diverse Te Pūkenga equity networks and working groups
  • Development of the anti-racism and racial equity approach and activity for Te Pūkenga
  • Provide equity thought leadership, expert insights, guidance and advice to Te Pūkenga leadership team.

To excel, you will need to be confident in engaging with Māori, hapū, iwi and diverse communities in a respectful and collaborative manner that engages hearts and minds whilst maintaining focus and direction.  Ideally, you will also have lived experience of structural discrimination and can demonstrate experience in dismantling these.

You must able to demonstrate Māori-Crown relations capability, and take a partnering approach in converging diverse perspectives to deliver on the desired outcome.

This role will suit you if you are determined and results driven, like to work at pace in a dynamic environment and contribute positively to a highly collaborative, team approach.  We also are open to secondments from iwi, community and the public sector.

Our Te Pūkenga office is located in Hamilton, however we encourage remote work and working from home.  Applicants for this role may be based anywhere within New Zealand.
