Communications Manager / Te Manu Tukutuku
The Cancer Society’s mission is to improve community wellbeing by reducing the incidence and impact of cancer throughout the entire country. With a revised strategic plan and equity charter in place, we are focused on addressing inequities in prevention, care and survivorship. Māori are twice as likely to die from cancer as non-Māori.
Reporting to the CEO, this role is based at National Office in Wellington CBD. The role has high level engagement with the Cancer Society National Executive Committee, the Medical Director, National Office staff and Divisional Managers, as well as the media and key stakeholders.
We are the “go to” non-government agency for comment on cancer and the broader health sector. We are looking for somebody to champion our plight, challenge our thoughts and drive communications initiatives that ensure we continue to be recognised as one of New Zealand's outstanding charitable associations.
About the role:
We require a manager who is comfortable with leading a team and contributing to the Society’s communications strategy, but also happy and willing to be involved in the daily duties alongside your team.
We want an outstanding relationship manager that can prove their ability to work collaboratively and cohesively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, and take a pro-active yet empathetic approach to the way we manage all aspects of our communications.
Key accountabilities include:
- Keep across communications, brand, marketing and PR trends that are relevant to the Society’s Strategic Plan and Equity Charter
- Reputation and brand management – the Society depends on trust in our brand to deliver services, fundraise and advocate on behalf of people with cancer
- Create and maintain a high performing team and working environment. This role currently has four direct reports
- Budget management including cost and expenditure monitoring and reporting of digital, print and social media activities
- Influence Divisional communications activities. This position will be required to work collaboratively with the six Cancer Society Divisions.
- Provide active support and facilitation to specific projects when needed
- Develop and review marketing collateral to align with sponsorship, fundraising and other impactful initiatives. Work with ANZ (Principal Sponsor) on Daffodil Day.
- Manage reactive and proactive media relationships, ensuring staff are briefed and prepared for media interactions.
Along with knowledge and expertise resulting from your previous communications management experience, you will have an influential, honest and inclusive approach that ensures you can bring people on the journey with you. While our mission is simple, our cause is transparent and our people are passionate about what they do. There are some complexities in our environment that will require a collaborative approach in order to deliver impactful outcomes.

- Ideally, understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori. Some ability in Te Reo Māori would also be desirable.
- Have a clear, concise and considerate verbal and written communication style
- Be able to think strategically, yet be detail focused and adapt to an evolving environment.
- Take the initiative to translate medical or technical language into everyday terminology
