The Office for Māori Crown Relations – Te Arawhiti is dedicated to fostering strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across Government. Our name symbolises the bridge between Māori and the Crown, the past and the future, and the journey from grievance to partnership. 

Te Arawhiti’s kaupapa is to make the Crown a better Treaty partner – to re-set, sustain, and build the Māori Crown relationship towards true Treaty partnership.

The Director, Strategy and Policy is responsible for the professional leadership, strategic oversight and operational management of strategy and policy across Te Arawhiti. They will oversee both short and long-term strategies for Te Arawhiti and the Māori Crown relations sector; and the effective provision of high-quality advice to Ministers and to support Te Arawhiti achieve its objectives. The role is part of the Te Arawhiti Leadership Group and contributes to overall direction setting for the agency.  The role has four direct reports.

This pivotal role at Te Arawhiti requires someone who can provide intellectual and professional leadership across and within organisations and bring a strong focus to the professional development of the strategy and policy team.  They will need to be able to build and maintain strong working relationships both internally and externally. Management experience in complex organisations including policy, strategic, operational, and financial management will be valued. To be successful, your previous experience will include policy development, strategic and people leadership, leading complex projects with a high degree of success, a track record for working across multiple agencies and providing ministerial advice. An understanding of Māori Crown relations and knowledge of historical and contemporary issues relating to Te Tiriti o Waitangi will be highly valued in this role.
