Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children works to advance the wellbeing and positive long-term outcomes of tamariki and rangatahi in New Zealand. In everything we do, the best-interests of children are paramount, and their voices underpin the design and operation of our services.

The Safety of Children in Care Unit leads all aspects of research and advice to the Minister and the Oranga Tamariki leadership team on the safety of children in care.

We have a great opportunity for a dynamic Principal Advisor to work with us on a 12 months secondment or fixed-term basis. This is a critical role responsible for providing national leadership and direction on situations where a person who was previously known to and/or in statutory care or guardianship alleges historical abuse or neglect which may raise a safety concern for tamariki who are currently in care.

You will be experienced in reviewing social work practice. Along with this, you will need to have a sound understanding of the complexities of harm experienced by children in care.

We are looking for the following:

  • Sound critical analysis experience with expert research and quality assurance skills
  • Outstanding relationship skills
  • A team player
  • Great energy and high levels of motivation
  • Superb written ability
  • Expert decision making skills
  • Experience in conducting reviews and investigations is an advantage

This role is ideally going to suit someone with a good understanding of professional social work practices and knowledge of operational policy, who wants to contribute to the ongoing wellbeing of children in care. This is an excellent opportunity to see the difference your work can make to the future of New Zealand.
