Principal/Senior Planner - Two roles

Aukaha Ltd

Closing Date : 29 Nov 2019

Are you keen to make a difference in environmental and planning issues across Otago?

Aukaha is an environmental consultancy involved in a wide range of private development and local government work programmes across the wider Otago region. We are involved in innovative and exciting work and need the added support of two Principal/Senior Planners – one specialising in Freshwater.

Aukaha is owned by five Rūnaka from across the Otago region. We offer a range of planning, environmental and cultural advisory services to councils, Crown agencies and private clients as well as environmental advisory and support services to our Rūnaka owners.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a purpose driven organisation creating enduring outcomes for our communities and the environment. These roles offer a variety of unique and challenging work alongside an established team already boasting a high level of technical expertise.

PRINCIPAL/SENIOR PLANNER - FRESHWATER

  • Permanent full time

Are you interested in influencing decisions which affect the quality of our waterways? Do you have the technical and communication skills to effectively shape and influence water policy development?

Would you enjoy leading a supportive team that provides planning and policy advice to Kāi Tahu Rūnaka to support their kaitiaki responsibilities for waterways in their takiwā?

Aukaha is expanding its freshwater work programme to meet the demands of the NPS freshwater and regional policy development. The takiwā of our Rūnaka owners extends across Southland, Otago and Canterbury so we are seeking a leader who can oversee a complex and wide-ranging programme of work across multiple regional councils. You would also be facilitating our Rūnaka response to deemed permit renewals. This role requires leading a small team to provide technical policy advice to Rūnaka as they work in partnership with councils and alongside other stakeholders.

PRINCIPAL/SENIOR PLANNER

  • Permanent full time

Working across a variety of projects relating to statutory and non-statutory planning processes you will provide planning advice and work closely with Aukaha staff, Iwi representatives, technical experts and a range of environmental bodies and agencies. Proven project management, communication and relationship skills are a must.

The role encompasses general planning and specific cultural planning services to councils and other clients on a variety of projects from district plan reviews to strategy development and consent proposals.

To be successful in these roles, you will;

  • Have a tertiary qualification in Planning and have or be eligible for membership to the NZPI.

  • Possess a minimum of 5 years’ experience within the field - ideally with local government
experience.

  • Have experience dealing with a range of stakeholders e.g. iwi, communities, corporates, government agencies.

  • Have proven experience working with the RMA and related legislation, including experience writing planning evidence, presenting at hearings and in Environment Court mediation.

  • Have excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills.

  • Preferably have an understanding of Ngāi Tahu cultural values; a willingness to learn and
embrace Ngāi Tahu cultural values is a must.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE: FRIDAY 29th NOVEMBER 2019.
