The position

The Director – Finance and Performance plays a critical leadership role at MfE. You are a trusted advisor and strategic finance lead for the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Leadership team. In this position you will support and work alongside the Chief Operating Officer , leading the Ministry's finance and performance function, growing the teams' capability to meet the needs and objectives of MfE.

Your financial understanding and insights create the building block on what is possible at the Ministry, your relationship skills ensure that the performance message is understood and your creative flair ensures that MfE continues to stay on the cutting edge of what is possible. We want someone comfortable challenging the status quo.

You will lead teams that deliver essential and valued advice, services and insights to the Ministry. The Ministry for the Environment operates a flexible environment to enable staff to work on various projects. You will be responsible for aligning the finance and performance work programme to MfE's strategic objectives, and delivering the organisational capabilities, systems, and ways of working we need to achieve success. Taking a business partnering approach is essential.

The Director – Finance and Performance is part of the Organisational Performance leadership team and the wider Directors group of MfE. As a Director you will actively collaborate with your colleagues to provide joined up advice and strategic leadership for MfE. As a senior leader the Director embraces and champions Te Ao Māori in everything we do.

As a people leader you will lead by example, supporting your people to deliver in an agile, project-based working environment. You will foster innovation, value diversity, and deliver on the collective leadership goals we set for ourselves. This includes using MfE's Edge Behaviours as the foundation of how you lead and our teams operate.

Priorities for the role:

  • provide stewardship of financial resources to enable MfE to deliver on its strategy, manage financial risks and seize strategic opportunities
  • lead an agile business planning and budgeting process for the whole organisation, to support forward planning and prioritisation across the work programme
  • provide integrated, future-focused performance advice to ensure MfE's financial position is optimised
  • ensure MfE has sound controls in place to meet good practice, Audit and Treasury requirements
  • lead and monitor the required financial management of the Emissions Trading Scheme.

The salary range for the role is from $165,563 to $223,997
