  • Take your career global with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
  • Represent New Zealand on the world stage
  • Work across a variety of global challenges

Here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) we're looking for our next intake of Foreign Policy graduates.

Our people are based in over 50 countries, working to provide answers to global challenges that affect New Zealanders. We are the Government's specialist foreign, trade and development policy advisers, international legal advisers and negotiators.

As a graduate, you'll begin your career as desk officer in Wellington before having the opportunity to rotate through a range of roles both on and offshore in our embassies, high commissions, missions and consulates. You may find yourself working on areas such as: APEC, climate change and the environment, development and humanitarian activities, bilateral agreements, environmental issues, and security.

Who are we looking for?

The nature of our work is broad-ranging, so we're looking for graduates with a range of skills, experiences and backgrounds. Diversity of thought is key, so there's no 'one size fits all' with our graduates. We're looking for people who are curious about global challenges and other cultures, people who are keen to help make positive changes for New Zealand. And because relationships are at the heart of what we do, you'll enjoy working with people.

Those who really stand out will have skills or experience in one or more of the following: Volunteer or leadership experience, strong cultural competency and language skills, academic excellence, or a strength in Mātauranga Māori.

Minimum requirements:

  • New Zealand citizenship - or have submitted an application with DIA
  • Bachelor's level qualification
  • Three months minimum work experience in any industry - part-time or full-time
  • Able to gain and maintain an appropriate security clearance
  • Willing and able to be posted overseas and travel for work

For those selected to attend our assessment centre in Wellington, assistance with domestic travel will be provided, and options for offshore candidates can be discussed. Contributions to relocation costs are available for those successfully employed.
