Massey University's Media Studies programme invites applications for a part-time (0.4FTE), two year Senior Tutor position (UK equivalent Teaching Fellow, US equivalent Lecturer) at our Albany campus in Auckland, New Zealand.

We are looking for a candidate with teaching strengths in relation to digital media from social and cultural approaches and perspectives.

All applications will be carefully considered, but we particularly encourage applicants with additional specialisations in one or more of the following areas:

  • Digital and online cultures
  • Social media
  • Emergent media forms and practices
  • Cultural theory
  • Popular culture
  • Political economy

Expertise in media production (digital video, audio, web design and/or photography) would be a useful additional area of expertise but is not essential.

The successful candidate must be able to team teach into the compulsory second-year undergraduate course 154.250 Digital Media Theory and Practice, in addition to teaching 154.203 Popular Culture and the Media. The successful candidate should also be comfortable using a range of pedagogical approaches to their subjects, ideally including vocational and creative approaches.

Media Studies is offered as a major in both the Bachelor Arts and Bachelor of Communication. The undergraduate programme in both degrees currently includes courses across three major areas of specialisation; digital media production, social/cultural approaches to media, and medium-specific approaches/methodologies, including screen studies. The graduate programme is available in the Master of Arts and Master of Communication, and offers a selection of courses in the above areas. Candidates are encouraged to view the full range of courses via our website at https://ems.massey.ac.nz

The School of English and Media Studies has a strong record in teaching excellence and pastoral care in an interactive learning environment. Courses are taught in internal (on-campus) and distance (online) learning modes, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School currently offers programmes in English, Media Studies, Creative Writing, Expressive Arts, Public and Professional Writing, and Theatre Studies.

The successful applicant will have a PhD either completed or very near to completion at the time of application. Experience of University-level teaching is essential.

It is anticipated that the selected candidate will take up the appointment in late January 2020.

Enquiries should be directed to Associate Professor Jenny Lawn (j.m.lawn@massey.ac.nz), School of English and Media Studies.
